Artist
Riona may be a young female singer songwriter but she is not to be dismissed as belonging to the wave of faux ironic teenage pop. Don't come expecting electronic handclaps or a cockney accent. There is a depth to her lyrics that surprise and beguile. Her songs have been described as "little stories in their own right, reminding of early Tori Amos but with a more definite hint of jazz in there" (Discovered in Dublin July 23rd 2009) Riona Sally Hartman is an artist who fully embraces her eclectic musical influences and pays them more than lip service. She assimilates genres as far ranging as klezmer, jazz and gospel into her unique pop aesthetic, such as 'Broken Woman' a three part a cappella chain gang song complete with stomping, or 'Seasnail' a sweet sounding waltz about the darker side of a love affair. Her Debut CD Sealegs is characterized by it's paired back refined arrangements and a band comprised of the bright young minds of the Dublin jazz scene, all with a firm dedication to their craft.
