Ricaine

Ricaine was a great rock and roll band from Melbourne, Australia in the mid-90s. Generally tagged as math-rock, they were inspired by fellow bass-heavy Aussies The Mark of Cain (Adelaide) and the Americans Big Black . The trio played its first show at the Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy, on the 5th December 1994, followed by a debut release in early 1995 in way of split 7" with Baseball aka Cameron Potts. After starting off with Steve Albini-style production, they quickly went beyond this to develop their own distinct sound that experimented with light & dark, tempo changes, jumping from bottom-end to high treble, and other cool stuff like that. Ricaine played their final live show in 2001, later releasing a final (and posthumous) full length album Urbanity‚ through Unstable Ape records. There are similar Australian bands that existed both parallel to Ricaine, such as Turnpike (Brisbane) and Eta Carinae (formerly known as Specimen 21 - from Tasmania) and other Melbournians that came later who were clearly inspired by Ricaine.
