Rex Smith is an American singer and actor who gained fame through his lead role in the 1979 NBC television movie Sooner or Later. The soundtrack album of the same name features pop and rock songs performed by Smith in the film. The single "You Take My Breath Away," written by Bobby Hart and Stephen Lawrence, reached number ten on the US pop charts and was certified gold. Other notable songs from the album include "Better Than It's Ever Been Before," "Simply Jessie," and "Never Gonna Give You Up." In 1981, Smith and Rachel Sweet had a Top 32 hit with a cover of the song "Everlasting Love." After hosting one season of the music show Solid Gold alongside Marilyn McCoo, Smith returned to theater. Smith made his Broadway debut as Danny Zuko in the original production of Grease! He received the Theater World Award for his role as Frederick in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway and also appeared in the film adaptation. Other Broadway credits include The Human Comedy, Grand Hotel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Annie Get Your Gun. He also appeared in productions at Lincoln Center's Anything Goes, The Kennedy Center's West Side Story, and the Canadian production of Sunset Boulevard. His national tours include Grease!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and They're Playing Our Song.
