From a very early age Rene Kaaij has been surrounded by music. As a singer/songwriter and keyboardplayer he writes songs based on personal stories and experience. The piano is his main instrument, but to him the songs themselves are actually the most important. This is proved by his first album, called 'Run up the sails'. A record which contains eleven songs, each with its own unique sound and character, but yet sharing the same passion and honesty. Even stripped to the bone, the songs remain strong enough to convince a listening audience. Rene first got familiar with the classic popsongs, while sitting in the backseat of his father's car. At the age of three, he got his first instrument, a drumkit, soon followed by a little toy-organ which was quickly replaced by a larger one, due to many empty batteries and broken keys. Several instruments later, he began to write his own songs. These songs helped him cope with all the impressions that adolescence had to offer. Rough ideas for lyrics could often be found in his homework. It soon became clear that Rene was destined to be a musician and so his highschool years were followed by four years of studying at the Conservatory of Rotterdam where he specialized in playing keyboards and working with today's technique. He finished his studies in 1998 and has worked as a keyboard teacher ever since. Rene Kaaij's debut album 'Run up the sails' was released on the 24-th of November 2006.
