Recommended By Your Mom are a New Zealand based pop-punk band consisting of singer Matthew Johnston, 19, guitarist Josh Edmonds, 21, bassist Joel Tyrie, 19, and drummer Sam Edmonds, 19. They started in high school in 2008 to enter Smokefree Rockquest, and in 2009 they won their regional finals. In 2010 the band gigged extensively around the South Island, playing at high schools, clubs and festivals, with many other NZ bands, including Opshop. By the end of 2010 the band had written, recorded and released their first album, "Now We Are", which received airplay around the top of the South Island. To kick off 2011 they did a short South Island tour with Kids Of 88, playing 3 shows in Nelson, Blenheim and Ashburton. The band made it through to the top 3 out of 107 bands in ZM's "Big Break" competition, of which first prize was to open for Good Charlotte at the ITM 400 in Hamilton. The band are influenced by the American punk scene, citing bands such as Blink 182, The Ataris, Angels and Airwaves, Jimmy Eat World and NOFX as sources of inspiration. They also enjoy bands from the local New Zealand punk scene; Goodnight Nurse and Elemeno P have been influences on the band's music. When the band aren't writing, recording, playing or promoting they spend their time skating, playing video games and drinking responsibly.
