Rafael Pérez Arroyo was born in Madrid. After finishing his higher studies in piano, composition and orchestral conducting he graduated in Musicology from the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música in Madrid in 1983. He furthered his studies in Orchestral Conducting with Sergiu Celebidache in Munich in 1980 and 1981, with Sir Charles Mackerras in 1981 and with Julius Kalmar in 1982 in Vienna. He has written numerous technical articles and studies of early Spanish instruments; particularly worthy of note is that on Renaissance harps. He also collaborated in the project: Historia de la música Española. In 1992 he began work on a multidisciplinary study of the music, musical instruments and dance of Ancient Egypt. The initial stage of this project culminated in the publication of the first book, written in collaboration with Syra Bonet: ‘Music in the Age of the Pyramids’, available in both Spanish and English editions. The book received excellent reviews in the specialist press, both Spanish and international. Since 1996 he has been lecturer in music at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid where he researches and publishes on music and rhythm in the performing arts, and gives the courses: Música Aplicada a la Danza, Música en las Artes Escénicas and Acústica y Ciencias de la Música.
