In order to further your craft, it is often necessary to re-examine your roots. The Northwest New Wave trio Radio Way from Portland, OR has done just that, drawing on a continuum of synth-based influences that extends from New Order in the 80s, through Joy Electric in the 90s, to the newer names of The Faint and The Bravery. So it should come as no surprise that driving beats and screaming synths form the foundation of their music, or that the title track of their newly released debut EP, Just Like the 80’s, also doubles as their motto. A newly formed band, Radio Way has made their short history count. David Eldridge (synth/programming), Phillip Wetmore (guitar), and Colby Judah (vocals), all high school friends from The Dalles, OR, formed the group shortly after graduating in 2007. Seeking to create high-energy dance music by mixing post-punk ideologies with classic pop structure, the band immediately set to work honing their skills and producing demos. 2008 brought numerous shows around the Pacific Northwest, a tour to California, and an appearance at a large local festival. Fans and audiences who attended their shows compared their sound to groups like Joy Division and Depeche Mode. The year culminated with the signing of a record contract with Northwest synth label HiCap Records in October.
