Punx Soundcheck met while with John Taylor was teaching at a DJ School in Greenwich London, and Arif Salih, one half of nineties duo ‘Natural Born Chillers’ was in the adjoining studio finishing their album. After becoming friends they decided to make a few tracks combining John’s knowledge of techno and house with Arif’s familiarity with hip-hop and the underground scene; the pair took their influences into studio to experiment with a hybrid of styles. They started Dj-ing as a team with John on the main turntables and Arif on the effects and sampler keyboard, re-mixing live, which took them to Hamburg in 1999. It was while there that they first heard the electro sound and decided this was their sound. At this time they were called ‘Phat Company’ but changed the name to ‘Punx Soundcheck’ in 2002 heralding the start of the electroclash scene in London. A natural progression for John and Arif, this outlet saw their pair joining forces with other skilled and enterprising producers and performers. A hub of dynamic musical activity, their group has a substantial body of projects under their belt and in progress, spanning many genres. As a duo Punx Soundcheck have done remixes for Atomizer (Gigolo Records), Dead Or Alive, Tigerbeat (Compost), Frau Doktor (Beautycase Records), W.I.T. (Mogul Electro), Steve Strange (Fade To Grey), Siobhan Fayey, Duran Duran and original tracks with Marc Almond, Dirty Monroes to mention but a few.
