Touted by many as the most atmospheric and exciting new band to come out of Essex this year, Protege Reign launched their first Album, Awakening, on October 10th 2011. Their highly original “Hypnotic Electronica” sound hints at Muse, Gary Numan and Depeche Mode in their mid 90’s heyday. The blending of Simon Kinsler’s driving indie guitar with Nigel Ward’s synth moods makes for a truly genre defining new sound. The album features 10 songs which frontman, Nick Burrows, tells audiences are songs about loves sought, loves lost and loves haunted. They champion the plight of society’s underdogs and fighters and send out echoing melodies and searching messages to their growing audiences. It includes the band’s first single What it Means to be me. The Protege, defined in this context by the band as their songs, receives support, protection and nurture until their intended coming of age. The protege's time has now arrived... So let the Protege Reign. Ressurected from an idea envisaged from a seedy bedroom in South Essex?.. Well, pretty much. Writing songs about social awareness desperation and hope, the band have shaped a sound reminiscent of the developing 80's synth culture but with an atmospheric and sometimes gritty edge. All blended with a dark, moody attitude, such as you might associate more with artists like The Cure, Suede or early Simple Minds.
