Porter Robinson is an American DJ, record producer, musician, and singer from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He started his career at the young age of 12, his passion for music being ignited by the media he consumed at the time, especially Dance Dance Revolution. Starting off making music online, he found his way to popularity and was in the mainstream by the end of 2010, after which he started gaining recognition from popular artists. His first EP, Spitfire, was signed on to Skrillex's OWSLA label, and he was commissioned for remixes from Lady Gaga and Avicii. After releasing the track Language, Robinson began to grow tired with the homogeneity of dance music at the time and started exploring the genre the way he wanted to, ignoring EDM norms. He eventually released the album Worlds, performing a live show for it that followed his own vision. The album was mostly about escapism, with every song being a world of its own. Robinson said he wanted everyone to have their own meaning for the songs, rather than him giving a definitive meaning or story to each one. Robinson later went on to collaborate with his best friend, Madeon, on a song called Shelter which eventually received an animated music video in collaboration with Crunchyroll and A-1 Studios. For the next few years, he released music under the name of Virtual Self, an alias dedicated to invoking nostalgia for early 2000s video games music, with live sets to compliment said feeling.
