José Porphirio da Paz. (Jan. 24, 1903 — Sep. 27,1983) wrote the official anthem of the São Paulo Futebol Clube, one of Brazil's most successful and traditional football (soccer) clubs. General Porphirio was a career officer in the Brazilian military and a veteran of the Constitutional Revolution of 1932 in the state of São Paulo, where he served several prominent political posts, including mayor of São Paulo and interim governor. He was a founding member of the São Paulo Futebol Clube and was one of its most dedicated and passionate supporters. As the story goes, Gen. Porphirio came up with the song in 1936 as he was being evicted from his home. Nervous, the then lieutenant had started improvising a song about his beloved club, to try to get his mind off his predicament. Later, after he calmed down, Porphirio wrote what he had hummed on a piece of paper. The song gained popularity among São Paulo fans and in 1942 became the official anthem of the club.
