Like all good bands, Pony Talk started as a joke. Ryan Brennan (lead guitarist) and Maggie Clancy (lead vocals) initially came together in the vibrant, albeit niche, arena of — a band revered for its Tony Hawk's Pro Skater soundtrack covers. Their dynamism, honed in small beer and sweat-soaked punk venues up and down the West Coast, found a new expression during the solitude of 2020’s lockdown, when Maggie was losing her mind living alone and Ryan suggested trying to write songs through Zoom, texts, and FaceTime. After some jokes and noodling, the two realized they had something cool going on and enlisted Skyler Garn (bass, ) Brian Marzan (rhythm guitar), and John Rockwell (drums, ) to start the horse play with Pony Talk, recording their first songs at the end of 2023. Pony Talk blends grunge and garage's raw energy with post-punk introspection, echoing the , , and another band that begins with P (reader’s choice). Their music, tinged with new wave and influences, probes the struggle of purpose, the value of labor, and digital-era connections.
