plus44Kaligula is the stage name of songwriter, electronic music producer, composer, and performance artist Cally Statham. Citing early duelling influences from her step-dad’s glam rock record collection on one hand and her granny’s love of jazz music and classical on the other, Plus44Kaligula’s sound is one of dark, dramatic impulses and strange, compelling juxtapositions. Statham’s bold vocals reign above ambient, collage-like productions that beckon lively machine choirs to song at one instant before dragging listeners into a deep ocean of ambient pads and watery texture the next. With influences such as David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Scott Walker informing her songcraft and performances, a deep theatrical sensibility is felt in Plus44Kaligula’s music, albeit grounded in the very real, earnest quality of her voice.
