Placidus Cajetanus Laurentius Camerloher was born in Murnau on 9 August 1718, his father Johann Baptist was a court clerk and his mother, Maria Anna Camerloher had been born in Freising. Some of his brothers were also musicians, the most prominent of them, Joseph Anton (1710–1743), working at the court in Munich. Placidus received his education at the Ritterakademie in Ettal and at the Jesuit Wilhelm Grammar School in Munich. When he was ordained as a priest in Freising Cathedral in 1744, he had already appeared as a musician and composer. In 1745 (or already in 1744), he was appointed director of the court orchestra in Freising by Johann Theodor of Bavaria, Cardinal and Prince-Bishop of Freising, Regensburg and Liège and finally elevated to the nobility by Elector Max III Joseph, Johann Theodor’s nephew. At the bishop’s court in Freising, Camerloher encountered a multi-faceted musical culture, including a court orchestra consisting of more than 40 musicians. Besides the church music for the cathedral and secondary churches, Camerloher was also in charge of the court musical setting with ceremonial acts, receptions, balls and theatre performances as well as being involved in the training of the choir boys. However, these activities were not merely confined to Freising, but were sometimes also required on the bishop’s journeys to the other residential towns. So, his rich musical oeuvre covers church music, orchestral and chamber music as well as musical school dramas. Followi
