Artist
Pieter Bustijn (1649?-1729), was a musician from Middelburg (Netherlands) and because of the fact that most of the Middelburg archives in 1940 has been lost, there is not much material left about his life. But considering the level of his skills, he must have been an important musician. In the early 17th century, Middelburg was an important center of art (after the fall of Antwerp in 1585) and after Amsterdam, the second trading center in the Republic. Middelburg had a collegium musicum, P. Bustijn must have been an important figure amongst the artists of Middelburg. He anticipates the keyboard writing of Händel and Bach. In 1681 he became carilloneur and organist of the Nieuwe kerk at Middelburg. In the Netherlands, this person also was in charge of the collegium musicum, when they had one in the city. He must have had excellent instruments at his disposal;. An instrument by Johan Morlet, was testged by Sweelinck. His suites were printed in Amsterdam by Estienne Rogier about 1712. Bach, Telemann and Mattheson, knew his work. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
