"Pictures Like This" were formed in 1979 by Nik Philpot (vocals and bass), Paul Nunneley (synths), Daniel Tee (lead guitar) and Keith Groves (drums). Based in the Guildford area the group were an active member of the flourishing Surrey music scene centred on the Wooden Bridge pub in Guildford that had spawned acts such as The Jam, The Vapours, The Drowning Craze and Disruptive Patterns. An early exit by drummer Groves which saw him replaced by the Roland TR-808 drum machine, led also to a change in the musical direction for the band, who moved further into electronic based pop influenced by The Cure, Depeche Mode, Japan and Simple Minds. The group recorded a demo at Catch 44 studios in Godalming of favourite live tracks including "Waste", "A Night's Vendetta", "Home Comforts" and "I'm Special". The demo session led to an immediate record deal from Bath based TW Records and the subsequent release of their first, and only single "A Night's Vendetta" in 1982. Spotted by Radio 1's John Peel the track entered the lower reaches of the singles chart and prospects for the band looked good. However, by the end of 1982 the members of the band were heading in different directions both for their further education and for their musical influences. It led to a perhaps inevitable split even though the group appeared to be on the verge of potentially breaking into the mainstream. Rumours of a reunion have surfaced sporadically but now appear unlikely, and the band remain one of the 80s
