Artist
Phono-Comb was a surf-rock/instrumental group from Toronto, Canada, active from 1993-1999. Members Don Pyle and Reid Diamond, drummer and bassist respectively from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet were at the time on hiatus, but after playing a show with guitarist/graphic artist Jad Fair at a Toronto show, the three were enticed into a followup project. Dallas Good joined the team on guitar, and Jad Fair & Phono-Comb was born. In 1995, they recorded a single ("In a Haunted House"), and by '96 their first full-length was released ("Monsters, Lullabies... and the Occasional Flying Saucer"). Fair headed back to his solo career after this recording, and bassist Beverly Breckenridge of Fifth Column was added (as Diamond switched over to guitar). The quartet recorded a full-length album - "Fresh Gasoline," produced by Steve Albini - in 1996. They toured North America in support of the album. In 2001, Reid Diamond died after a long battle with brain cancer. Phono-Comb's sound is surf-rock inspired, but its tones are more serious and post-rock than the goofier surf-rock acts at the time. There's obvious influence from Albini on "Fresh Gasoline," much like Shadowy Men's "Sport Fishin'." There's more Slint than "Kids in the Hall," but the Shadowy fans won't be disappointed.
