Phÿcus is an industrial band from Canada, formed in 1988 by sculptor and performance artist BruSeX and sound explorer Brian Damage. It quickly expanded into a collective of noncompliant artists intent on forging new ground in sound performance. Their provocative, confrontational live shows won them a small group of fans and the ire of many. Phÿcus' first two years were based in Halifax where, because no club would have them, they often resorted to alternate venues for performing such as metal shops and abandoned churches. When all opportunities in Halifax were exhausted, Brian Damage moved to Montreal. Rather than destroying Phÿcus, the move provided more outlets for the band. Phÿcus collaborated with Neoist founder Monty Cantsin/Amen (Istvan Kantor), and members from the Halifax days continued to contribute to the group's output, in some cases also relocating to Montreal. It is this Montreal line-up that recorded our first CD, "Brainmower", which was released in 1995. In the summer of 1996, Phÿcus migrated, mutated and evolved once more with Brian Damage moving to Ottawa where he worked "for" the government. As with the move to Montreal, this move again extended Phÿcus' reach, and the influx of day-job cash greatly reduced the monetary restrictions on our label, Musicus Phÿcus, allowing it to become more active.
