I wonder if Pete Thompson is not actually a storyteller, a poet, dressed up in a musician’s guise. His songs have a narrative feel: characters, settings, dialogue, journeys… his story or Everyman’s? At a recent gig he said: I was thinking about this song and I realised it was actually about me… again. Well, yes, stemming from him but tapping in to common human experiences: loneliness, drifting, searching for understanding, choices, responsibilities, courage, faith… The lyrics are powerful, often playful, occasionally bawdy, always brutally honest and they seem to me to stand alone. And yet there is something mesmerising in his voice, something compelling in his performance. The music lends a rhythm, an intensity; it gives permission to release the emotion that words alone would perhaps deny.
