Ernst Peter Johannes Maag (10 May 1919 – 16 April 2001) was a Swiss conductor. Peter Maag was principal conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf from 1952 to 1955, then general music director of the Bonn Opera for four seasons. In 1959 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with Mozart's Magic Flute and at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera with Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. In the same year he made his first guest appearance in the USA - with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 1961 he made his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago with Mozart's Così fan tutte, and in 1962 at the Salzburg Festival with Mozart's Idomeneo. From 1964 to 1968, Peter Maag was chief conductor of the Vienna Volksoper. In 1972 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera with Mozart's Don Giovanni and was appointed artistic director of the Teatro Regio di Parma in the same year. From 1974 he was chief conductor at the Teatro Regio di Torino, then at the RAI Symphony Orchestra (Turin) and at the Orquesta Nacional de España. He was music director of the Bern Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1991 as well as the orchestra's chief conductor di Padova e del Veneto from 1983 to 2001. He also made guest appearances in opera houses and concert halls around the world. Peter Maag has a son, the children's book author Georg Maag. Maag's first wife was Jasmina Božin, a Serbian set designer. He has a daughter with his second wife Marica Franchi (Marika). Maag was a member of the Biel
