Formed in Porthmadog in 1999 by members Dave and Aron, Pep Le Pew have become the dominators of many aspects of the Welsh music scene. Not only are they renowned for their exciting and consistently funky live performances together, they also lend a hand to their numerous side projects: Penelope are a stripped down, more acoustic version of The Pew sans samples and scratching; Y Soffas are masters of the bootleg; Y Lladron are at the cutting edge of cool song-mashing; Gwallt Mawr Penri churns out high-quality dance tunes; Mehefin Y Cyntaf is chilled but consistently high-calibre electronica. Band members also play live with MC Mabon, MC Saizmundo and Maniana. Former Tystion member Steffan Cravos's label Fitamin Un released the band's first single Y Mwyafrif in early 2001 to an excited press. The song became one of the most remixed Welsh-language songs ever, with mixes by DJ Dafis, Kentucky AFC and a version by Y Soffas mixed with the theme tune from Grange Hill. After a summer of wowing Wales and London with a string of live performances, their debut album Y Da, Y Drwg Ac Yr Hyll was released on their own MPLP label. An eclectic album featuring guest rapper MC Mabon and boasting 21 tracks, it has become an essential part of any Welsh-music fan's CD collection, with moods ranging from explosive in Y Gwir Dy Gwir to the seriously chilled Smocio. In 2002 Pep Le Pew received a mantelpiece-filling slew of awards. At the BBC Wales Rock and Pop awards they were awarded Best Newco
