Paul Wertico (born January 5, 1953 in Chicago) is one of the most versatile and musical drummers in music today, Paul Wertico gained world recognition as a member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1983 until 2001, leaving the group to spend more time with his family and to pursue other musical interests. During his tenure with Metheny, he performed on ten CDs and three videos, appeared on many television shows, and toured the world dozens of times. Also during those years, he won seven Grammy Awards (for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, and Best Rock Instrumental Performance), numerous magazine polls, and received several gold records. In recent years, Wertico has performed regularly in the world, and around his hometown of Chicago, leading to the creation of his own band, Paul Wertico Trio, and also several successful collaborations with other jazz notables, such as Larry Coryell, Kurt Elling, and Jeff Berlin. These collaborations allowed Wertico to release several albums with various jazz groups, and also gave Wertico the opportunity to produce music for many of these albums. When Paul is not touring, he divides his time between studio work, producing, and leading his own groups. Paul has played with such jazz greats as Eddie Harris, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Sam Rivers, Bob Mintzer, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Roscoe Mitchell, Evan Parker, Jay McShann, Herbie Mann, Randy Brecker, Jerry Goodman, Ramsey Lewis and many others.
