Paul Halley is best known for his work as the keyboardist, pianist, and composer for the Paul Winter Consort. However, his work also includes several solo improvisation albums on both piano and organ, as well as a series of Chorus Angelicus recordings, which he both founded and directed. Born in England, Halley attended Trinity College at Cambridge, and received his M.A. in composition and performance. Halley then became the organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, where he served for twelve years, from 1977 to 1989. Halley was first introduced to Paul Winter in 1980, at which point he was invited to join the Paul Winter Consort, with whom Halley performed, toured and recorded until 1999. During this time, Halley earned four Grammy Awards for his contributions as featured writer and performer on many Consort recordings. As a soloist, Paul Halley has recorded two albums with Living Music, while Halley’s later compositions and recordings are produced and distributed by Pelagos Incorporated, for which Halley acts as Creative Director. Among his most acclaimed recordings is “Nightwatch”, a landmark improvisation album recorded on the Great Organ of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Halley's music has been performed and by many notable artists and ensembles, including the New Jersey Symphony and John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra.
