The album is a collection of in situ recordings from Mississippi State Penitentiary, the infamous maximum security prison known as Parchman Farm. Producer Ian Brennan recorded the prison's Sunday gospel service and the results are haunting and unforgettable. Performances range from solo a capella to a floor-shaking band. The repertoire includes both traditional and newly penned spirituals. Some performers gave Brennan their names and ages for listing on the album sleeve; one performer chose to remain anonymous.
