Papete (Jose de Ribamar) was born in 1947, in the city of Bacabal, in the state of Maranhau. He is the youngest of a set of four great Brasilian percussionists: Airto Moreira, Nana Vasconceles and Anunciacao are his antecedants. Together they form the foundations of a school which influenced musicians throughout the world. The music of Papete was originially released on the independent Discos Marcus Pereira label. In the 1970's this label released a series of records that focussed on the folkloric traditions of Brasil. This series had a profound influence on many Brasilians, both musicians and non- musicians.
