Paolo Masnelli (c. 1551 - 10th February 1613) was a Veronese organist-composer. He was born around 1551 in San Francesco al Teggio (today San Francesco di Roverè Veronese), from Angela and Melchiorre (Marchioro) di Simone. At the beginning of the eighties of the sixteenth century, Melchiorre's parents were resident in Verona, where Melchiorre was a janitor at the Filotima Academy, a position paid with a modest salary and the free granting of accommodation; the job also entailed the obligation to play the drum during jousts and tournaments organized by the Academy. As early as the seventies M. had begun to emerge as a musician in Veronese circles: in 1578, in fact, two of his songs Quando nocchier ben wise up per l'onde and Gridi, pianti, sospiri, aspre querele had been published in the First book of the five-voice madrigals by Paolo Bellasio, a slightly younger colleague of M., also making his publishing debut. Four years later M. published his first printed collection, the Madregali… first book for four voices(Venice, A. Gardano, 1582; modern ed., edited by C. Tupputi, Padua 1998). The work is dedicated "to the musicians of the highly honored musical hall of the illustrious Counts Bevilacqua".
