He was born in Oakland, California, United States, on June 21, 1952. He began his music studies in 1959 with his mother, Bárbara Dane; later he continued them in Berkeley, California, where he studied trombone (1964-1966). Between 1966 and 1968, he was a guitar disciple at Isaac Nicola's National School of Art, and later at the School of Modern Music, 1968. From 1969 to 1970, he received classes in harmony, orchestration and composition from the North American composer, based in Cuba, Federico Smith. This last year he was one of the founders of the ICAIC Sound Experimentation Group, in which he received classes from Leo Brouwer, Federico Smith and Juan Elósegui. He has been part, at different times, of the groups Sonido Contemporáneo - led by the saxophonist Nicolás Reinoso, and integrated, among others, by the pianist and composer Gonzalito Rubalcaba -; and Grupo Síntesis, directed by guitarist and composer Carlos Alfonso. In addition, he has worked with the rock group Havana, Yoruba Andabo, Clave y Guaguancó, Raíces Profundas and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. All this experience was turned into the founding, 1985, of Grupo Mezcla, which, starting from Nueva Trova, incorporated elements of Cuban rock and jazz, rumba, reggae, zouk from Martinique and music from other areas of the Caribbean.
