P.LEELA was a renowned playback singer and a Carnatic Musician. Till October 2005 she enthralled all the music lovers with her melodius voice. She has sung innumerable songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Born in Chittoor (Palghat-Kerala), Leela had her training in Carnatic music under Vadakkkancheril Rama Bhagavathar. Her Carrer as Playback singer began in 1947. Her first song was in the Tamil film 'Kankanam'. Next year she sang for 'Nirmala', which introduced the playback system in Malayalam. She had since then left hundreds of Malayalam scores. Some of her immortal songs are 'Ujayiniyile' ,'Periyare' in Malayalam, 'Kannum Kannum Kalandhu' Ellam Inba Mayaam’in Tamil and 'Emito Ee Maya' 'Rama Kadhanu' in Telugu. She received the title 'Kalaimamani.' from Tamilnad Govt. and First Playback Singer Award from Kerala Govt. Narayaneeyam and Vakacharthu recited by Leela, is played every morning in Guruvayur temple.
