Pão com Manteiga was a Brazilian progressive rock and psychedelic rock band formed in São Paulo in 1976. Despite a very short-lived career, the group left behind a single album that later gained cult status among collectors and enthusiasts of obscure 1970s Brazilian rock. Pão com Manteiga emerged during the peak of Brazil’s underground progressive rock movement in the mid-1970s, a period marked by experimentation, conceptual albums, and a strong influence from both international prog acts and local avant-garde music. The band consisted of five members who combined electric and acoustic instruments with unconventional arrangements and fantasy-inspired lyrics. Their self-titled album, Pão com Manteiga (1976), was released by Continental Records and remains the band’s only official release. The record blends psychedelic rock, progressive structures, and experimental textures, featuring shifting moods, extended compositions, and a noticeable interest in mythical and medieval imagery. Lyrical themes reference characters such as Merlin and Lancelot, evoking imaginary worlds like Avalon while subtly reflecting on contemporary society. Although the band disbanded shortly after the album’s release, the record was rediscovered decades later by collectors and researchers of Brazilian underground music. Today, Pão com Manteiga is frequently cited in discussions of rare and adventurous Brazilian rock albums from the 1970s and has been reissued in limited vinyl pressings. Members Joh
