Artist
"The swagger of a Balkan wedding band with the riotous energy of a Latin carnival." Based in Scotland, but taking in musical influences from far and wide, Orkestra del Sol inflect their music with a raucous enthusiasm. Blending the best of brass with the swinging sounds of samba, New Orleans street music or the rolling rhythms of Turkey and the Middle East, they charge through it all with full-blooded rock and roll speed. They make mincemeat of musical categories. The band cite influences including Balkan big names like Boban Markovic, Mahala Rai Banda and Fanfare Ciocarlia, but also pay homage to Calypso and Mento, The Specials, Tom ZΓ©, Duke Ellington, Stephane Grapelli and Tom Waits as well as Elvis, Fats Waller and even a doff of the cap to Bollywood, Sevdah and Dubstep. There's a strong comedy element in play too, as evidenced by their Python/Gilliamesque album cover art and their high octane, thoroughly theatrical stage shows. "The genius of the Orkestra is the way they hide serious musicianship inside tongue-in-cheek humour. It's a winning combination" - The Scotsman http://www.orkestradelsol.co.uk/ http://www.myspace.com/orkestradelsol User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
