Orkes Irama was a musical ensemble formed through the collaboration of three prominent Indonesian musicians: Jack Lemmers (who later changed his name to Jack Lesmana), Idris Sardi, and Bing Slamet. The group emerged during the administration of President Soekarno, a period marked by government efforts to safeguard national culture from foreign—particularly Western—influences. In 1959, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia issued a directive prohibiting the broadcast of certain Western musical genres such as rock and roll, cha-cha, tango, and mambo on Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). President Soekarno derogatorily referred to these styles as ngak ngik ngok music. In response to this cultural policy, Soekarno commissioned the three musicians to explore and develop the lenso rhythm—a form of traditional social dance originating from Ambon, in the Maluku Islands. This collaboration resulted in the production of an album titled Mari Bersuka Ria dengan Irama Lenso (“Let Us Rejoice with the Lenso Rhythm”), featuring performances by several notable artists including Bing Slamet, Rita Zahara, Titiek Puspa, and Nien Lesmana. Officially released on 14 April 1965, the album was accompanied by the Orkes Irama ensemble under the direction of Jack Lesmana. The ensemble included Idris Sardi (violin), Jack Lesmana (guitar), Bubi Chen (piano), Darmono (vibraphone), Loddy Item (guitar), Maskan (bass), and Benny Mustafa (drums). The album featured a selection of songs such as “Gendjer-Ge
