Nury Halmämmedow (1940–1983) was a famous Turkmen composer and has been described as one of Turkmenistan's "greatest sons". His legacy has been commemorated with anniversary events within Turkmenistan. Nury Halmämmedow was born on 24 February 1940 in Baharly (Bäherden), Turkmenistan. He had a very difficult childhood, losing his parents in the 1948 earthquake and was raised in an orphanage. As a 9-year-old boy, Halmämmedow was first introduced to the piano at a school in the capital, Ashgabat, and his teacher quickly recognized the youngster's exceptional talent. He graduated from the Turkmen State Musical College in 1958 and penned his first composition at the age of 19, as a student at the prestigious Moscow State Conservatory. Nury Halmämmedow introduced Turkmen music to a global audience by adapting traditional music for symphonic orchestras. He also wrote music for the opera, ballet, and musicals based on Turkmen lyrics. His score for the historic Soviet film "Şükür Bagşy" brought the composer instant fame at the age of 22. He went on to compose music for many other films and documentaries. His scores accompany more than 10 Turkmen films, including "Aýgytly Ädim", "Kecçelek," and "Magtymguly," which today are recognized as the nation's modern classics.
