There have been at least seven groups called (The) Numbers including an American (kraut) rock group from San Francisco, a Seattle-based electro-metal jazzcore band, a broken beat producer, and power pop bands from Australia, Canada and Bristol, UK. The Australian power pop band, The Numbers was formed early in 1978 in Sydney by Annalisse Morrow on bass guitar and lead vocals and her elder brother, Chris Morrow on lead guitar and lead vocals, with Marty Newcombe on drums. In January 1979 Newcombe was replaced on drums and percussion by Simon Vidale. The group supported UK band XTC on its Australian tour in 1979. The Numbers released its debut three-track, EP Govt. Boy, on the Local Records label in September 1979. Late in 1979 the group signed with Deluxe Records, which issued a single, "The Modern Song", in March 1980. A second single, "Five Letter Word", reached the Australian top 40. The band released its self-titled debut album, The Numbers, in October 1980. The album was was recorded at EMI Studios 301, Sydney and produced by Cameron Allan. The band released its second album, 39.51, in April 1982. This album was produced by the former drummer of Australian band The Angels, Buzz Bidstrup. The group disbanded in 1984.
