Norihito Sumitomo (住友紀人), born on February 27, 1964, in Tokushima, Japan, is a Japanese composer, arranger, and musician recognized for his contributions to anime and film music, particularly within the Dragon Ball franchise. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in the United States, where he deepened his knowledge of jazz, orchestration, and contemporary composition. Early in his career, Sumitomo established himself as a saxophonist and collaborated with a variety of artists, including pianist Bob James during his Asian tour and Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. His work as a performer, influenced by musicians such as Michael Brecker and Branford Marsalis, shaped his stylistic versatility and later informed his compositions. Sumitomo’s first anime scoring project came in 2008 with Shikabane Hime: Aka. However, his career gained international recognition in 2013 when he was chosen to compose the soundtrack for Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. He went on to create music for Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, the Majin Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters, the full run of Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018), and the feature film Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018). His musical style is characterized by the fusion of orchestral arrangements with electronic and rock elements, producing a modern and cinematic sound.
