Artist
Neville Marcano, known as the Growling Tiger, was a popular performer from calypso's golden era of the 1930s. As a performer, both in the recording studio and before an audience, Tiger deployed expert timing, rhythm, harmonic and rhythmic shading, and above all, a sense of presence. Although his singing conveyed a wide range of feelings, he always maintained a sense of mastery over his setting. Mr. Marcano, a bantamweight boxer who won the Trinidadian title in 1929, made his first recordings in New York in 1935 for the Decca label. He was also the last singer and only calypsonian that Alan Lomax recorded on his 1962 Caribbean field trip.
