about

Minimal Electronics/Synth band from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK. Neural Circus was formed in 1979 from the ashes of the punk band 625 Lines. After being frustrated by the limitations of traditional guitar, bass and drums format, David Cracknell, the band’s founder, decided to replace his guitar with a WASP synthesizer and recruited Liam Tungate, purely for the reason that he drank in the same pub and had a Korg MS20 synth. The duo welcomed anyone with complimentary ideas to their own. The occasional band members included Mike Thomas, Mike Prince, Systems Pete, Wally Wallace, Nigel Hunt, Adam Brown, Claire Gibson and Steph Lang, some of whom were performance poets or dancers. In 1980 the band entered Ric Rac studios in Leeds with the intention to record an improvised piece of music, but they were persuaded to write an EP of four distinct songs of which two were written on the way to studio. “Exit”, the The Neural Circus E.P.’s opening track and the closest example to the original intention of the recording session, was performed straight to tape. 1000 copies of the EP were pressed but only 200 officially distributed. David Cracknell was very unhappy with the recording and burnt the remaining 800 copies during an outdoor performance.
