Basic notes re: QUANTUM FILM - improvisational music and film project Five musicians gather in an equal number of sound-proof booths set up for recording. Each player has one or more instruments. A screen is set up in a central location, viewable by each player. A pre-produced film is shown on the screen. The players are instructed to spontaneously “compose” a soundtrack to whatever appears on the screen. However, no musician is able to hear what the others are playing. Intuition replaces “listening” as the mode of cooperation. A “conductor” directs the ensemble from a position in front of the screen. The conductor assists in tempo (i.e., tempo changes), listening to the entire ensemble via headphones in order to keep the energy flowing in interesting wave forms. The ensemble is instructed to approach the pieces in a “quantum” manner. An engineer records the ensemble on 5 separate tracks to be mixed in a variety of ways. It’s possible a “re-mixer” is asked to take the tracks and fashion an entirely new soundtrack to the film. The results of the project become the soundtrack to the film viewed during the live recording process.
