The quintet highlights compositions of its leader, Nate Wooley for his trumpet with the support of Matt Moran on vibraphone, Josh Sinton on bass clarinet, Eivind Opsvik on bass, and Harris Eisenstadt on drums. Normally known for his more confrontational solo trumpet recordings or work with Paul Lytton or Anthony Braxton, in this band, Wooley explores his roots in jazz. The line up is reminiscent of Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch, and takes a similar stance to swing and joyous improvising. He has assembled a group made of some of the most interesting leaders and collaborators in the New York jazz scene, and his compositions feature each member of the band in new and surprising ways. Not merely a “jazz" project, the quintet compositions also explode the basic building blocks of music like rhythm, harmony, and the melodic line.
