The History Truly cosmopolitan spirit, world traveler, workaholic and a multi-talented artist: Natalia Data’s rich background has contributed to the formation of a very unique and diverse musical identity. Born in Russia, she spent most of her life outside its borders exploring the world geographically and culturally. She began collecting records at the age of 10, when she met a DJ for the very first time in a summer holiday work camp. The tape given to Natalia by this man, whose profession was rather unusual for Soviet Russia, was Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ - definitely not something your typical 10 year-old Russian girl is expected to be interested in! Natalia began DJing at the age of 18 in Lithuania. She was playing tapes and reel-to-reels of mad hardcore, acid and rave underground music. The tunes were often ripped off pirate radio and satellite TV, due to the lack of proper records and CDs. When she moved to the US her obsession with music and DJing grew stronger. While studying fashion at Cornell University in New York State, she spent every extra bit of money she had on buying records. The move to New York City gave her more exposure to the club scene. But it would be the Winter Music Conference 2000 that changed Natalia’s life. Mesmerised by the variety of musical styles represented by world famous DJs and producers she realised that New York’s very specialised underground scene was too limiting for her aspirations.
