New Orthodox is the current recording project of Nicholas Merz, who plays in the bands Sunset Rubdown and Darto and previously released music under his own name. The project debuted in September of 2024 with the single “Bottomed Out,” a collaborative track with Freak Heat Waves. In December of that same year, it was announced that New Orthodox had signed to Joyful Noise Recordings, who would be putting out the band’s first full-length album - one of the last records Steve Albini produced prior to his passing.
