Mute with Stupefaction is the overall creative-type project of Ben Seretan. Under the name, Ben Seretan maintains a blog and has released two recordings on Future Folk Records. "Mute with Stupefaction" comes from the Marquez novel One Hundred Years of Solitude - the phrase is used to describe the character Jose Arcadio Buendia as he sees himself represented in a daguerreotype. In this fact, there are present many of the themes of the music and projects under this name - poor translation, a fondness for the antiquarian, a fascination with documentation and historical record, self-reflexiveness, clumsy words. Musically, these ideas become essentially a big mess. Layers of guitars, broken radios, tape recorder, and looped, processed vocals blend over songs about Steely Dan, the American Southwest, and the Standardized Time hotline, yet still maintain something essential of pop composition. Listenable, even catchy at times, the music of Mute with Stupefaction is still probably at its core dense and overwrought. Regardless, the songs shine through.
