Mulberry Bend is American folk artist, Susanna Carman, and Irish finger-style guitarist, Karl Farren; two musician-songwriters with distinct immigrant backgrounds whose ironically juxtaposed musical tastes drew them together to inspire their unique brand of Irish/Blues fusion. Susanna Carman, a former New Yorker who immigrated to Australia in the mid-1990s, hales from a musical, Jewish family who arrived in New York City in the late 1890s as part of the post-civil war wave of Irish, Italian and Eastern European emigration to America. Irishman, Karl Farren, left Dublin by way of England and arrived in Australia around the same time as Susanna, bringing with him the story telling traditions of Irish culture and a love of American Blues music. The two settled serendipitously in a little town on the North Coast of NSW, where they met at the local folk club and began their first collaboration on Farren’s debut album, Repentance Creek. The interplay between Farren’s ‘backwoods soul’ approach to finger-style guitar and Carman’s Celtic/Appalachian fiddle sowed the seed for Mulberry Bend, in which Carman’s love of traditional Irish music merges with Farren’s passion for old-time American blues. Shortly after arriving in Australia, Carman launched her solo career with the release of her album, Holy, following her E.P. debut, I Am The One, for which she one best Female Vocalist at the NCEIA Awards.
