Colin Brown and his cohorts enlisted Better Than Ezra bassist Tom Drummond to record their debut full-length CD, “Underwater Demolition,” in 2000. The album merged the musicians’ New Wave and modern rock influences into a distinct sound. Interwoven electric and acoustic guitars, supplied by Mr. Brown and fellow guitarist Michael Blum, were at the heart of Motorway’s sound. They toured extensively with Cowboy Mouth and Better Than Ezra. In 2002, Motorway released a self-titled, second CD. At the time, Mr. Brown reiterated his and his bandmates’ commitment to the project. “In the last couple of years we’ve developed a lot more of a band mentality, a one for all, all for one mentality, as cheesy as that sounds,” he said. “A lot of people think a rock band can’t make it in New Orleans. It can be done, but it takes a ton of work. I’m willing to try, and I know we are as a band.” Motorway disbanded after Hurricane Katrina, which also shuttered Nick’s Bar, the Tulane Avenue watering hole where Mr. Brown worked. In 2010, Mr. Brown, guitarist Jimmy Robinson, drummer Chris Bailey and ex-Motorway bassist Pete Winkler briefly formed a band called Mocksey.
