Artist
Moses Pergament, born on 21 September 1893 in Helsinki (Finland; then Grand Duchy of Finland, Russian Empire) and died on 5 March 1977 in Stockholm (Sweden), was a Swedish composer, conductor and music critic of Finnish origin. Moses Pergament studied music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (1908-1912), the University of Helsinki (1913-1915), the University of Stockholm (1919) and the Stern Conservatory in Berlin (1921-1923), among others. After moving to Sweden, he obtained Swedish citizenship in 1918 and became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1952. A composer mainly of classical music, he is credited with four string quartets, a violin concerto, two piano concertos, the choral symphony Den judiska sången, and various pieces for a cappella choir, among others. He is also the author of the music for three Swedish films, the first two released in 1940 and 1944; the third is Alf Sjöberg's Barabbas (1953, with Ulf Palme in the title role). During his career, Moses Pergament was also a conductor (and choirmaster), as well as a music critic for the Svenska Dagbladet from 1923 onwards. He is the uncle of the composer and pianist Erna Tauro (1916-1993). User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
