As The Purkinje Shift, Ben Davis, Gary Flom and drummer Scott Robbins would don suits during live performances and play their thirty-five to forty-minute sets straight through, with no breaks whatsoever, keying on subtle clues and practiced repetition to signal the beginning of new songs. It made for a numbing, chilling experience, one most bands writing this type of music couldn’t successfully achieve. But the ‘Shift was as sharp as their suits, and for two albums, one 7” and numerous live shows, they turned many an ear in their direction. Robbins is gone, as are the suits, but the guitars and penchant for sinewy song structures still remain, further honed by time and brought to a new level of sophistication by new drummer Adam Overton. Please note the distinct lack of irony or anything post-. Too often that’s what gets lost with instrumental rock bands: The rock. And while the men of Moreland Audio love their details, it is the rock that thrives in this engine.
