Monkey, Don't! is the sole work of Mark Robson, a 26 year old London resident who is originally from the Hampshire suburban seaside, a place with little to do except mess around in the seafront arcades or in the countryside whilst getting messy on various recreational drugs. Add to this an obsession with music and a bad case of OCD and you have the roots of Mark's music. Mark often speaks of his obsessive compulsive disorder, and the fact that he has to unplug everything in the house and lock and re-lock doors several times before leaving to go out, so when he gets down to making his music it takes him an eternity to switch on all his mysterious nicenoise making machines, so he brews up cup of tea, and starts composing what we at Manna Records consider to be the finest quirky pop music this side of Neasden. Unfortunately for a lad who grew up by the sea, Mark has Thalassophobia, which equates to a fear of the sea, all in all, he is kind of like a musical version of the daytime TV detective Monk, but don't let this deter you, his music shimmers with a lo-fi glory, referencing all kinds of genres from jazz and funk to pure pop music and post rock, but all tied together with sweet vocal hooks and odd key changes, imagine Pavement and the Flaming Lips moving to Hammersmith and recording in a bedroom and you are getting close to where his sound is.
