Jamal Patterson, known to the hip hop world as Money Slim, was born in Brooklyn N.Y, raised in Vander Veer Projects, with a very big family. As a child drawing, playing basketball, and listening to rap music were his hobbies. At age 13 he no longer wanted to look up to rappers, he decided to become one. Soon after, he formed his first rap group, consisting of 3 other friends from the neighborhood. After performing several shows at the Arc (A popular night club in the early nineties) they were asked to open for “The Bush Babies” (A local rap group that achieved moderate success). Due to his grades declining his mother made him stop rapping and doing shows. After graduating from high school he attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia, majoring in Animation. It wasn’t long before he found out that one of the schools curriculums was audio engineering. The studio wasn’t much needless to say, but it had a microphone and Protools, and that’s all Slim needed. What started out as a couple of freestyles for fun turned into a buzz around campus, from their he entered in open mics around Philadelphia. However once financial aid ran out Slim had to leave school. He decided to start fresh again, and move with his girlfriend to Florida. It was their where he first began recording in a professional studio (Hide Away Studios w Jimmy Star). Prior to recording at Hide Away, Slim had never recorded a full song.
