Janjay Lowe, known professionally as Mon Rovîa, is a Liberian-born Afro-Appalachian singer-songwriter who grew up in the United States. Janjay Lowe was born in Monrovia, Liberia. Around the age of seven, he was adopted by an American family. During his childhood, his family lived in Florida, Montana, the Bahamas, and Tennessee. He was first exposed to folk music while living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As he developed an interest in music, he learned to play the ukulele, guitar, and other instruments. In 2017, Lowe uploaded his first song to SoundCloud under the name Mon Rovîa, which references his birthplace of Monrovia, Liberia. In 2020, he released his first extended play, "Sunburnt". His debut studio album, "Dark Continent", was released in 2021 and incorporated elements of hip-hop, trap, R&B, and folk music. In 2022, his musical style shifted more prominently toward folk, as reflected in songs such as "Vulture Culture", "Where the Rivers Run", and "Borderline". Beginning in July 2023, he released a series of four extended plays structured around the concept of the hero's journey: "Act 1: The Wandering", "Act 2: Trials", "Act 3: The Dying of Self", and "Act 4: Atonement". The single "Winter Wash 24", from "Act 4: Atonement", was inspired by the work of the International Rescue Committee, and proceeds from the song were donated to the organization. In 2024, Mon Rovîa was included in Spotify’s "Juniper Artists to Watch" list and made his music festival debut at Bonnaroo.
