GRES Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel was found in 1955 in the east zone of Rio in the neighboorhood Padre Miguel, and is one of the big sambaschools of Rio de Janeiro. Already in 1959 the make part of the first group of ten best sambaschools and in 1979 they are for the first time champions. They will repaet this four more times, of which three times in the ninetees. As a samba school their artists change over time but worth mentioning are Mestre André - the leader of the bateria (drum band) who made mocidade already famous in the early days with his invention of the 'paradinha' - and Elza Soares who sang various carnivals in seventies and is still the godmother of the bateria.
