Miro Sprague, 23, is a jazz pianist, composer/arranger and bandleader. Miro grew up in Western Massachusetts, the son of two performing musicians, but he did not begin to seriously pursue music himself until he was 13, when he heard Miles Davis’s “Kind Of Blue” for the first time. Deeply inspired, he soon began to study jazz piano, teaching himself and studying with local musician Dagen Julty, who encouraged him to write his own music along with learning jazz repetoire. Within a few years, Miro was performing with a variety of local college and high school groups and leading his own trio. As a teenager he won a number of awards, including being honored in the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Downbeat magazine’s national student music awards with prizes for composition and performance. He also won awards at many jazz festivals, including the Berklee Jazz Festival, where his trio took a 1st prize and he received an outstanding musician award two years in a row. When he was 16, he released his first album, “Trio Mission” and has since released two more albums, Midnight , and Opening. In 2003, Miro moved to New York to attend Manhattan School of Music, where he got the chance to study with teachers such as Gary Dial, Chris Rosenberg, John Riley and Jason Moran. In May, Miro is completed his final semester and graduated with a bachelors degree in jazz piano performance.
